Firstly the latest news brings more disruption for local residents, as your local bin workers now plan to strike over pay. In Addition this action could stop if staff agree to a revised offer.
Earlier this month, GMB and Unite members, over half the workforce, voted on strike action. Hence up to 94% supported a strike after Biffa offered what they called an offensive pay deal.
Also Biffa, the outsourced waste collection company for Manchester council, offered most staff a 1.75% rise. This increase equals only 17p per hour. Some workers said they would picket until Christmas over the offer.
Therefore if the strike goes ahead, up to 220,000 households could lose waste collection services. The strike is set to start on May 3 for ten days, followed by two more weeks from May 23.
However, GMB announced yesterday (April 27) that workers will now vote on a revised offer. If they accept it, the strike will be called off. The vote result is expected tomorrow. Therefore the details of the new offer are not yet public.
Bin Strikes Cause Major Disruption — How It Could Affect Your Area
Michael Clark, GMB organiser, said: “GMB and Unite met with Biffa today. After long talks, the council made a revised offer. We will now put this offer to our members. We expect the vote result on Friday.”
Brighton and Hove workers returned to work after a two-week strike. They reached a deal with GMB. However, the strike caused a huge backlog of bin bags in only two weeks. The council said clearing this waste could take up to four weeks.
Contractors started work on Sunday to reduce the backlog. They may return to help council workers speed up the clean-up.
Brighton and Hove City Council said blocked pavements and vermin became a “growing and serious” health risk. If you have ever smelled two weeks of waste on the street, you know it is not pleasant.

How much does it cost to clear a garden in Greater Manchester?
The price to have a Greater Manchester Garden Cleared is dependent on what is to be removed. Clearances vary considerably from a couple of bags of cuttings to full garden renovations. We can also dismantle structures such as sheds and greenhouses and uplift decking where required. Primarily, our prices are based on the volume and weight of waste to be disposed of. Other factors such as excessive labour and access restrictions can adjust this on some occasions. A final price will be agreed upon before any work commences unless the clearance is to be completed on a per load basis and this will be stated explicitly before work begins.

Here we are in January 2022, and it finally feels like life is getting back to normal — or is it? Recently, many residents have called us to say their bins haven’t been collected by the council. Many people think they’ve reached the council, only to realise they haven’t. I’ll be honest, it’s also very hard to find a phone number for them these days.
So, I did a bit of digging to see what was going on and found this news article.
Bins ‘overflowing’ in parts of England as Covid hits collections
Staff sickness in areas including London, Gloucestershire and Somerset leads to waste services being scaled back.
Bins in parts of England are now “overflowing” after Christmas because Covid has left councils short of staff. Councils in London, Manchester, Somerset, and Buckinghamshire say they must reduce bin collections due to sickness.
In Enfield, councillor Stephanos Ioannou said he drove around his ward and saw overflowing bins and Christmas trees left outside. He explained that he received twice as many complaints as usual. “At Christmas, I normally get about 30 emails a week about waste. Yesterday, I had around 50 or 60.”
Chelmsford City Council said 23 staff members were off sick, so they cancelled three days of food waste collections.
North Somerset council, meanwhile, said it was unable to collect 1,000 recycling bins on New Year’s Eve because crews remained “stretched due to staff sickness”. Read on

The Rubbish Removers Secure New Headquarters Amidst Continued Growth
Wed, Jan 19, 2022 9:04
One of the North West’s leading rubbish removal companies is moving to new premises. Thus enabling them to streamline operations and recycle even more waste. The Rubbish Removers, a family-run business that has been specialising in waste removal for the past 20 years. Has experienced significant growth during the pandemic. And hopes to better serve its domestic and commercial customer base from its new headquarters in Dukinfield.
The move comes just six years after the firm established a new headquarters on Lord Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne. Following a two-year growth period which saw The Rubbish Removers Ltd grow by an impressive 50%. The new office on Outram Road is located less than three miles from the previous headquarters.
Growing Demand Met with Trusted and Responsible Waste Removal Services
The move is certainly necessary. With The Rubbish Removers family doubling since the start of the global health crisis in a bid to meet growing demand. The company is currently collecting record amounts of domestic and commercial waste. Totalling around 100 tonnes of rubbish each and every month. Additionally transporting more than 100 fridges and upwards of 200 mattresses to suitable recycling facilities located across the North West.
Chris Johnson, The Rubbish Removers Managing Director, says “The industry went through a very challenging period at the start of lockdown; a ‘perfect storm’ of homeowners generating more waste while recycling centres and tips remained closed. Unfortunately, this sparked a rise in the number of unlicensed removals companies. Who simply dump rubbish or fly tip, rather than disposing of waste in a compliant, responsible, and ethical manner.
“That’s what’s really been the driving force behind our expansion. We’re striving to extend our reliable, professional and trustworthy services to even more households and businesses across the North West and Yorkshire. Giving our customers peace of mind that their rubbish is in the best hands.”
Growing Demand Leads to Expansion Across the North West and Yorkshire
Chris, who founded The Rubbish Removers Ltd alongside wife Diane, is not the only one to notice an increase in waste removal demand over the past two years. It’s been reported that household rubbish increased by 20% during the pandemic, with the average household throwing out 1.2 tonnes of waste. To address this increasing demand, The Rubbish Removers extended services from Greater Manchester to incorporate the whole of the North West and Yorkshire.
So what’s next on the growth plan for The Rubbish Removers Ltd? Vehicles. “We’re actively upgrading our fleet of vehicles to be more efficient and ecofriendly, and we’re excited to begin our journey towards carbon neutrality.”
