Here we are in January 2022, and it finally feels like life is getting back to normal — or is it? Recently, many residents have called us to say their bins haven’t been collected by the council. Many people think they’ve reached the council, only to realise they haven’t. I’ll be honest, it’s also very hard to find a phone number for them these days.

Bins ‘overflowing’ in parts of England as Covid hits collections

Staff sickness in areas including London, Gloucestershire and Somerset leads to waste services being scaled back.

Bins in parts of England are now “overflowing” after Christmas because Covid has left councils short of staff. Councils in London, Manchester, Somerset, and Buckinghamshire say they must reduce bin collections due to sickness.

In Enfield, councillor Stephanos Ioannou said he drove around his ward and saw overflowing bins and Christmas trees left outside. He explained that he received twice as many complaints as usual. “At Christmas, I normally get about 30 emails a week about waste. Yesterday, I had around 50 or 60.”

Chelmsford City Council said 23 staff members were off sick, so they cancelled three days of food waste collections.

North Somerset council, meanwhile, said it was unable to collect 1,000 recycling bins on New Year’s Eve because crews remained “stretched due to staff sickness”. Read on
