What Are Rubbish Removal Companies?
Rubbish Removal Companies provide a service to remove unwanted rubbish, waste, junk, appliances and furniture from your property. The team will collect waste from anywhere on your property and load it onto a vehicle. Waste will then be taken to a fully licensed waste transfer station for disposal.
Why Rubbish Removal Companies Are Important.
Rubbish Removal Companies fill an essential void in the waste management chain. Emergency and short notice collections ensure businesses and homeowners can continue as normal when their usual service breaks down. Bulky waste collections provide a solution to take unwanted items to the tip for people who do not have access to larger vehicles. Such services will include all labour. This will save the customer from getting their hands dirty or having to lift anything heavy. All while ensuring that waste, junk and furniture are disposed of legally.
Alternatives To Rubbish Removal Companies.
There are a number of rubbish removal solutions:
- Charity Shop Collections – There are many charities such as The British Heart Foundation that can collect your bulky items for resale. There are certain stipulations based on the quality of the items and how sellable they are. Sofas for example must display valid fire safety tags. The items must also be reasonably accessible for the operatives to remove them. Unfortunately, in recent times the second-hand furniture market has taken a hit. With limited floor space on their premises, many charities have had to become much more stringent with what they can and cannot remove. If you opt for this solution, teams often leave items behind so we advise having a backup plan in place.
- Council Bulky Waste Collection – Local councils provide collections for bulky items and appliances with prices and availability which can be found online. Prices are calculated per item. You must safely store items outside of the property and make provisions to ensure the items do not end up wet in the rain. Waiting times can vary, however in recent times it is not unlikely for wait times to be upwards of 6 weeks.
Hands-on Solutions
- Skip hire – If you have space for a skip they can be a good solution to clear smaller items and particularly rubble and soil. Prices depend on the size of skip you require and will be subject to an additional road permit – unless you have private land on which to drop the skip. You are not allowed to put certain items into skips, including fridges, mattresses and paint. It is important to make sure you hire the right size skip to ensure you don’t pay for more than you need or have waste left over that won’t fit into the container. It is also well reported that skips attract others to dump their waste into them so it is advised to order the skip close to when you intend to fill it.
- DIY – If you have the facilities to do so, clearing the waste yourself is usually the cheapest option. Public tips allow you to take limited amounts of waste, a limited amount of times per year. Rules differ in different areas so be sure to ring ahead. Certain types of waste are restricted and if the rubbish is dirty, the best practice would be to line your car boot with sheets.

What Licenses Do Rubbish Removal Companies Need?
In England, Rubbish Removal Companies are required to hold a valid waste carrier’s licence with the Environment Agency. They should also be happy to display this in their marketing and provide a copy to customers when requested.
You can check licences on the Environment Agency website.
Companies should also hold public liability insurance to enter your property.
What Types Of Waste Can Rubbish Removal Companies Collect?
The type of license held will determine what specifically the business can remove. Typically they will be able to remove all types of loose non-hazardous waste, wood, metal, bulky items, furniture, electricals, fly-tipped waste, bric a brac, garden waste and building materials.
Due to licensing and health and safety issues, most businesses will not be able to remove:
- Asbestos
- Soil
- Clinical waste including syringes
- Gas canisters and bottles
- Liquids such as oils, fuels & paints.
- Truck/tractor tyres.
- Hazardous or toxic materials.
How Do Rubbish Removal Companies Charge?
The volume and weight of the waste usually dictate the price. The most accurate way to give a quote is usually if you send through pictures. However, if this is not possible, an experienced company will be able to give a fairly accurate quote from a brief phone call. Speaking over the phone will also give you a good idea of how professional the firm is.
For the purpose of categorizing your waste in terms of volume, firms usually use cubic yards, a fraction of the size of the vehicle or in some cases washing machines. This can be confusing and if you are unsure of exactly what you are booking be sure to clarify what specifically you are purchasing.
It is important to check the quote provided is honest and does not have any hidden fees. More often than not VAT will be in addition to the cost. Some firms also charge for labour in addition to volume. This could increase the price significantly on the day of the collection.
At The Rubbish Removers Ltd, we include all labour and all waste transfer costs in our prices to avoid any misunderstandings. Our prices are honest and transparent and our teams in the office will be happy to discuss our prices in depth.
What Paperwork Should Rubbish Removal Companies Provide?
On completion of a clearance, Rubbish Removal Companies should provide you with a full invoice and a waste transfer note. Documents should clearly state the company’s license number, registration number, address, VAT number (if charging you VAT) and contact details. For larger clearances, particularly on commercial premises, a reputable and competent company will provide a RAMS document for the works.
Do I Need To Be Present When You Collect The Waste?
As long as the waste is easily accessible or you can provide keys, you do not strictly need to be present. We often undertake remote clearances where customers pay over the phone by card.
This has been particularly useful for property clearances where the customer who is organizing the clearance is not local. We can either have keys posted to our head office, collect keys from a local estate agent or gain access to a key safe. For these clearances, we can provide before and after photographs and send these through by either WhatsApp or email.
Where Do Rubbish Removal Companies Take Your Waste?
Strictly speaking, a waste carrier’s license requires businesses to dispose of your waste at a licensed waste transfer station.
At The Rubbish Removers, we go far beyond what our license requires. We dispose of everything we collect both legally and ethically. Wood, metal and hardcore is sent to specific transfer stations for recycling. Fridges and mattresses are separated out and sent to state-of-the-art facilities which remove hazardous elements and recycle what is left. We dispose of general waste at a network of carefully selected transfer stations that focus on minimal waste to landfill. Typically we divert upwards of 95% of all the waste we collect from landfill.
In a standard month, we collect in excess of 100 Tonnes of waste. Before we tip the general waste we separate on average 30 Tonnes of wood, 10 Tonnes of metal, 10 Tonnes of hardcore, 100 mattresses and 100 fridge/freezers from this.
How Are The Rubbish Removers Different From Other Rubbish Removal Companies?
In Short, The Rubbish Removers are a family-run business. We provide a professional, reliable and ethical service to each of our customers.
With over 20 years of experience in the industry, we work for a multitude of clients both domestic and commercial. We tailor services to the needs and requirements of each individual customer and complete each clearance with a high level of professionalism.
The size of firms in our industry ranges from a single man and van operation, which may not have the capacity to take on larger clearances or provide a quick response to your enquiry. To larger national companies who typically subcontract work out, this can result in a breakdown of communication between the company with who you have booked the work and the person who will actually undertake the collection.
The Best In The Business.
We are a regional company who are large enough to provide a fast response to your enquiry whether you have a single item, a house clearance or large commercial premises to clear. However, we are close enough to the ground to be able to give a personal service, ensuring we complete the work to a high standard. All our collection teams are polite, and friendly and wear our uniform with pride. We interview them personally to ensure they will upkeep our values.
As we continue to grow we are committed to staying grounded, ensuring we maintain the quality of the service we provide. We consistently receive genuine, 5-star reviews for our work and customers often return to use our services again.
We are not the cheapest, but we are the best and we are confident that the quality of service we provide ensures high value for money.
The Rubbish Removers are a member of the Which? Trusted Trader scheme, as well as the Trading Standards, Buy With Confidence scheme, both of which independently assess us and ensure our licences and insurances are up to date, and that our codes of practice are both ethical and fair to our customers.
