Eddie Kirkwood Litter Picker Finally Recognised!

December 1, 2017

How would you respond if someone handed you a black bin bag and asked you to clean your area? Let me guess—“How much will I be paid?” or “It’s too cold,” or “I can’t be bothered.” These are common excuses. Still, many community members regularly come together to keep their neighbourhoods clean. However, the latest story making headlines on Facebook and national news is about one man: Eddie Kirkwood. His efforts highlight how one person’s action can inspire others to care for their community. This story reminds us that small acts can lead to big changes. So, what’s stopping you from joining in?

Eddie Kirkwood proves what real community spirit looks like. At just 28 years old, he lives with Cerebral Palsy and uses a wheelchair. That hasn’t stopped him. Instead of focusing on what he can’t do, Eddie chose to become an active litter picker in his local area. He spends eight hours every day, seven days a week, picking up rubbish others leave behind.

Most people avoid the job, asking, “What’s in it for me?” or saying, “It’s too cold.” Eddie never makes excuses. He gets out there and does the work with pride and determination.

Before throwing rubbish from your car or dropping it on the pavement, stop and think about him. Eddie doesn’t complain—he acts. His dedication inspires others to do better for their community. Rather than scroll past stories like his, take a moment. Grab a litter picker. Take responsibility. Start making a difference, just like Eddie does every single day. Read more of Eddies story here.

We at The Rubbish Removers, clear and dispose of domestic and commercial rubbish on a daily basis and while driving around, are disgusted by how much waste people are willing to just dump anywhere without giving it a second thought.

So next time you are out and about, think! Save it, Bin it. So people like Eddie don’t have to go around cleaning up after you because they have a desire to live somewhere nice and clean.

How companies are helping win the fight with recycled rubbish

November 24, 2017

In our previous blog, we highlighted the situation that has arisen regarding Recycled Rubbish. However, just two of many major companies have vowed to become even more environmentally friendly.

These are their stories…

Coca-Cola to double amount of recycled plastic in its bottles by 2020

Coca-Cola plans to double the recycled plastic in its bottles from 25% to 50% by 2020. Meaning this change comes amid growing pressure on manufacturers to reduce environmental harm. Every minute, people buy one million plastic bottles worldwide, and Coca-Cola produces around 100 billion annually. By increasing recycled waste in its packaging, the company aims to reduce landfill and pollution. Also consumers demand real change, and Coca-Cola is responding. Although this isn’t a complete fix, it represents solid progress. Consequently, more brands must follow suit and commit to using recycled waste in their products.

Coca-Cola plans to invest millions in buying recycled plastic from a top UK recycling facility. Its brands include Fanta, Sprite, Oasis, Lilt, Schweppes, and the classic cola drink. To meet its 50% recycled plastic target, the company will source materials from a plant in Lincolnshire. This site is Europe’s largest and most advanced plastic bottle recycling facility. By investing locally, Coca-Cola supports UK recycling and reduces its environmental footprint. Clearly, the brand is taking action to meet growing demand for greener packaging. With this step, Coca-Cola pushes recycled waste into the spotlight. It means a Coca-Cola bottle could be recycled and returned to the shelf in its new form within six weeks.

Apple pledges to make iPhone entirely from recycled rubbish material

The tech firm said work is well underway towards its pledge to make its products with zero environmental impact.

Apple has announced a bold goal: to build all iPhones, iPads, and other products using only renewable or recycled materials. Currently, the company still relies on mining, but ultimately aims to stop taking new materials from the earth. In its latest environmental report, Apple confirmed progress toward a “closed-loop supply chain.” In other words, it wants to reuse everything it needs, avoiding new extraction entirely.
Although this goal is ambitious, Apple says the work is well underway. With continued effort, the company hopes to eliminate environmental impact from its product manufacturing process.

Although many more companies are doing there bit as well. Read on…

We remove and dispose of domestic and commercial rubbish every single day. As a result, we understand how important proper waste handling is. That’s why we’re proud to say we recycle 80% of all rubbish we collect. Importantly, this recycled rubbish gets processed correctly through licensed facilities. Even as we grow, we remain committed to maintaining this high recycling rate. In fact, we see it as part of our responsibility to the environment. So, when you choose us, you’re also choosing a greener, more responsible rubbish removal service.

What is happening with our recycled waste?

November 15, 2017

Many of you are aware that recycling your waste is the way forward, but are you actually aware of what happens to our recycled waste once your bin collection is over?

Over time, more people have recognised the need to protect the environment and reduce unnecessary waste. Because of this, the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—have become part of everyday life. In homes, reducing and reusing come naturally, but in offices, recycling has taken the lead. Businesses often generate large volumes of paper, packaging, and general waste. Therefore, office recycling plays a crucial role in cutting down landfill. Across the UK, we now recycle about 25% of our rubbish. Although that’s an improvement, we still lag behind many European countries. To help close the gap, councils have introduced stricter rules. Some issue fines for sorting mistakes, while others reduce bin collections. A few even use bin microchips to monitor waste. Still, many people support these efforts. After all, turning rubbish into recycled waste benefits everyone. By working together, we can protect resources and create cleaner communities.

But where does our recycled waste actually go…

Most recycled waste in the UK gets processed locally, with many final products staying within the country. However, some of this waste still travels abroad. Bottles, tins, and plastics often return as packaging or become bricks, insulation, or even car parts. In many cases, recycled waste helps create road surfaces and construction materials. So, although it moves, it usually travels hundreds—not thousands—of miles. At one time, much of our waste went to China.

Now, that’s where a serious issue begins. China has tightened restrictions on the waste it accepts from abroad. As a result, the UK must find new solutions for handling recycled waste. Councils and companies now face growing pressure to manage it responsibly and locally. Thankfully, new facilities and technologies are emerging to support that shift. Still, long-term success depends on better habits at home and work. Recycling only works when everyone does their part.China bans foreign waste – but what will happen to the world’s recycling? Read more…

Plastic waste is a major concern!

So what will happen to the plastic collected from domestic and commercial properties once the Chinese refuse to accept it? What are the alternatives?

Plastics collected for recycling could go to energy recovery (incineration). They are, after all, a fossil-fuel based material and burn extremely well – so on a positive note, they could generate electricity and improve energy self-sufficiency. Many local authorities collect recycling that is jumbled together. But a major side effect of this type of collection is that while it is convenient for the householder, there are high contamination levels which leads to reduced material quality. This will mean it is either sold for lower prices into a limited market, will need to be reprocessed through sorting plants, or will be incinerated or put in landfill. But changes to recycling collections and reprocessing to improve the quality of materials could be expensive.

So it is now time to change our relationship with plastic and other general waste.
