The government introduced the landfill tax on October 1, 1996, to support environmental protection.
Landfill operators collect and pay this tax for every tonne of waste they send to landfill. They pay a higher rate for active waste, like plastic packaging. They pay a lower rate for inactive waste, such as builder’s rubble. At launch, the standard rate was £7 per tonne. The lower rate started at just £2 per tonne.
Since 1999, the government has steadily increased the standard rate. It now stands at £82.50 per tonne.
The lower rate also increased slightly and currently sits at £2.60 per tonne. On April 1, 2016, the standard rate will rise to £84.40 per tonne. The lower rate will remain at £2.60 per tonne.
Every waste disposal operator pays this fee to the government before earning any profit.
We make this payment before covering wages, fuel, maintenance, or other running costs.
In 2015–16 alone, the Landfill Community Fund received £59.4 million from this tax. Yes, that’s £59.4 million in just one year! Imagine how much the government has collected since the tax began in 1996.
The real question is: where does all that money go? Is it truly improving the country as intended?
