Fly-tipping, like in this picture, now happens far too often in country lanes and back alleys. We recently posted a blog about this problem, yet the number of cases keeps rising. Later in this story, you will see CCTV showing what some businesses choose to do instead of following the law. But why does this keep happening?

Many people think rubbish shouldn’t cost much to remove, so they choose the cheapest option. However, few understand the huge costs involved in recycling or managing landfill sites. These processes cost billions and take massive amounts of time, and someone has to pay for them.

Social media is full of posts about protecting the environment. However, when it comes to paying for waste removal, many forget their morals. Some assume, “If I don’t see it, it won’t harm me.”

But be careful—someone is always watching. CCTV now covers almost every corner.

The Manchester Evening News recently showed exactly what happens when you get caught.

Moment CCTV catches fly-tipper dumping van load of rubbish on street

Keenan, 23, of Bosworth Street, Manchester, denied taking part in the fly-tipping when council officers interviewed him under caution. However, CCTV proved he had turned fly-tipping into a business, and he avoided jail by a narrow margin.

The footage shows Keenan collecting waste from a business owner’s home. This same rubbish was later dumped on Sand Street. The business owner confirmed she paid Keenan £120 to remove the waste.

At Manchester Magistrates’ Court, the judge gave him a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He also received 200 hours of community service and was ordered to pay £2,284 in court costs. Watch the video here.

Fly tipping, or illegally dumping waste, really goes against everything we stand for in our industry. However, government policies and budget cuts have increased landfill taxes and reduced free tipping options for small businesses and the public. Overall, fly tipping is illegal, and it’s spreading far beyond the usual image of cowboy builders dumping waste in fields. Did you know that contaminating recycling bins at your local center counts as fly tipping? Also, if you hire an unlicensed rubbish removal company and your waste gets dumped illegally, you’re responsible and could face a hefty fine. It’s important to stay informed and act responsibly to avoid trouble.

More and more, local and national campaigns focus on householders’ Duty of Care. They must check for a valid Waste Carrier Licence and a Waste Transfer Notice. These campaigns want residents to think twice before using ‘the man with a van’ who might work outside the system. Such drivers often can’t prove where your waste ends up.
