Disruption To Bin Collections

Firstly the latest news brings more disruption for local residents, as your local bin workers now plan to strike over pay. In Addition this action could stop if staff agree to a revised offer.

Earlier this month, GMB and Unite members, over half the workforce, voted on strike action. Hence up to 94% supported a strike after Biffa offered what they called an offensive pay deal.

Also Biffa, the outsourced waste collection company for Manchester council, offered most staff a 1.75% rise. This increase equals only 17p per hour. Some workers said they would picket until Christmas over the offer.

Therefore if the strike goes ahead, up to 220,000 households could lose waste collection services. The strike is set to start on May 3 for ten days, followed by two more weeks from May 23.

However, GMB announced yesterday (April 27) that workers will now vote on a revised offer. If they accept it, the strike will be called off. The vote result is expected tomorrow. Therefore the details of the new offer are not yet public.

Bin Strikes Cause Major Disruption — How It Could Affect Your Area

Michael Clark, GMB organiser, said: “GMB and Unite met with Biffa today. After long talks, the council made a revised offer. We will now put this offer to our members. We expect the vote result on Friday.”

Brighton and Hove workers returned to work after a two-week strike. They reached a deal with GMB. However, the strike caused a huge backlog of bin bags in only two weeks. The council said clearing this waste could take up to four weeks.

Contractors started work on Sunday to reduce the backlog. They may return to help council workers speed up the clean-up.

Bins ‘overflowing’ in parts of England as Covid hits collections

Staff sickness in areas including London, Gloucestershire and Somerset leads to waste services being scaled back.

Bins in parts of England are now “overflowing” after Christmas because Covid has left councils short of staff. Councils in London, Manchester, Somerset, and Buckinghamshire say they must reduce bin collections due to sickness.

In Enfield, councillor Stephanos Ioannou said he drove around his ward and saw overflowing bins and Christmas trees left outside. He explained that he received twice as many complaints as usual. “At Christmas, I normally get about 30 emails a week about waste. Yesterday, I had around 50 or 60.”

Chelmsford City Council said 23 staff members were off sick, so they cancelled three days of food waste collections.

North Somerset council, meanwhile, said it was unable to collect 1,000 recycling bins on New Year’s Eve because crews remained “stretched due to staff sickness”. Read on
