Now I have your attention and before the gossip mongers start and tongues get wagging, here is our story…

We met 25 years ago, 10 years prior to the Rubbish Removers being founded, got engaged, bought a house and had 2 wonderful children.

Why has it taken so long? I hear you ask, honestly cannot answer that question, maybe as everyone knows life just seems to get busier and busier and when people say ‘next year’ before you know it, 25 years have passed.

We did not want the typical wedding (church then reception) we wanted something that everyone who came would remember the day.

We decided on Lindos in Rhodes, Greece. There were 30 friends and family who joined us for the whole week and as the saying goes it was the ‘best day of our lives’.

Our daughter did my hair and our son gave me away (A real family affair).

Oh and to just let you know, I have had my own career and only became his secretary 5 months ago. Doesn’t he move fast….. So to end this story we are now well and truly a family run business as our son has also joined the team, along with our nephew who is now our manager, so you can see we are real people who pride ourselves on putting our customers first… We would love to hear any comments you wish to make by following us on twitter/facebook.

Did you know? Everyone who handles waste, including householders has a ‘duty of care’ to dispose of their waste responsibly. Recently there has been a lot of bad publicity about white van man fly tipping. Unscrupulous people advertising to clear your waste and then instead of disposing of it at a licensed waste transfer station, fly tipping to avoid the waste transfer costs. Unfortunately this kind of bad behaviour is on the increase and the producer of the waste will be liable and face prosecution, if they fail to take reasonable measures to ensure their waste is handled by an authorised waste carrier and the authorities can prove that the fly tipped waste originated from them.

The way to avoid this situation is at first contact with the waste remover to ask to see a copy of their waste carriers licence, the environment agency licences all legitimate waste carriers every three years (make sure it is in date) also on this licence you will see the licence number, address and telephone number of the waste remover. When the job is complete you should receive a waste transfer note/ invoice and the waste carriers licence number and address should correspond with that on the waste carriers licence.

As a society, it is each individual’s responsibility to keep our lifestyles today sustainable, so too ensure future generations have the resources they will need. In recent times it has become very clear how important it is to re-use these finite resources where we can.

A quick search of government statistics shows that waste to landfill has dropped from a staggering 100m tonnes in 1997 to around 39m tonnes in 2013, and has continued to steadily decline. Yet as a society we are generating more waste than before. This is explained with the rising interests and education on the importance of recycling. In 2013 councils in England reported the percentage of household waste recycled had risen to 40% from just 11% 10 years previous. We do however still have a long way to go.

Throughout 2014-15 our local council (Tameside) piloted and then rolled out a bin swap scheme. In this scheme the large black bin used to dispose of none recyclable waste is swapped for the smaller green bin usually used to dispose of glass. Since this initiative was put into action for 30,000 properties in the area, Tameside council have already reduced the amount of waste to landfill by a quarter, which in turn has saved the council as much as £3million which can now be used in different sectors to improve the community.
